Peace Bridge Motel

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Peace Bridge Motel (located near the bridge approach on the West Side, owned by Herman and Sarah Weinstein) was operating at a critical crossroads of local culture, transit, and underground activity.

By 1969 and 1970, the motel had become a prime focal point for law enforcement, specifically the New York State Police and the FBI.

The Underworld Connection

While the motel publicly tried to maintain a community presence behind the scenes, it was a notorious hub for the Buffalo Crime Family (the Magaddino FX/Cosa Nostra family).

Declassified FBI and state police files from that exact 1969–1970 window reveal that the motel was actively being used as a safe meeting place for high-ranking mob associates and local bookmakers.

The Interstates and the Border: Its location was entirely strategic. Positioned right at the gateway to Canada and sitting near the burgeoning Thruway infrastructure, it allowed figures traveling between Southern Ontario, Buffalo, and Central New York to slip in and out relatively unnoticed by local precinct cops.

The Lottery & Gambling Ring: The state police were running a massive, multi-year investigation into a state-wide illegal lottery operation run out of the Niagara Frontier. Declassified documents note that mob figures like Joseph Falcone and associates of Stefano Magaddino used the Peace Bridge Motel rooms to cut deals, drop off cash, and coordinate rackets without having to travel up to Niagara Falls or deep into the East Side.
